1. Basic Gameplay Terms
Serve
Every rally starts with a serve. In pickleball, the serve is an underhand stroke that must travel diagonally into the opponent’s service court.
Return
This is the shot made after receiving the serve. A good return sets up the rally in your favor.
Rally
The sequence of shots that continues until one side commits a fault. The longer the rally, the more exciting the point.
Fault
A rules violation that ends the rally, such as hitting the ball out of bounds or into the net.
Point
Only the serving side can score a point. If you win a rally as the receiving side, you simply earn the chance to serve.
2. Court & Zones
Baseline
The back boundary line of the court. Standing behind it is required when serving.
Sideline
The side boundary line that marks the playable width of the court.
Non-Volley Zone (NVZ)
NVZ is commonly called “the Kitchen”. This is the 7-foot area on each side of the net where you cannot volley the ball. This rule keeps play fair and reduces smash dominance near the net.
Service Court
The area where the serve must land. It’s split into right and left sections by the centerline.
Centerline
This line divides the service courts and helps determine where the serve should be aimed.
3. Shots & Techniques
Volley
Hitting the ball out of the air before it bounces. Volleys are common during fast exchanges near the net.
Dink
A soft, controlled shot that lands in the kitchen, forcing opponents to move forward and limiting their attack options.
Drop Shot
A gentle shot from farther back on the court that drops just over the net into the kitchen.
Drive
A powerful, flat shot aimed to pressure opponents into making mistakes.
Lob
A high, deep shot designed to push your opponents toward the baseline, creating space at the net for you.
Erne
An advanced volley taken near or outside the sideline beside the kitchen, often involving stepping or jumping out of bounds for a sharp-angle return.
Third Shot Drop
A strategic soft shot played as the serving team’s third hit, designed to neutralize the receiving team’s advantage and allow you to approach the net.
4. Rules & Scoring
Side Out
When the serving team loses a rally, the serve passes to the other team.
Two-Bounce Rule
The serve and the return must each bounce once before either team can volley the ball. This rule encourages longer rallies and fairness.
Let
A serve that clips the net but still lands in the correct service court. In modern rules, play continues rather than replaying the serve.
Game Point
The moment when a team is one point away from winning the game.
5. Player Slang
Banger
A player who favors powerful drives over soft shots.
Dinker
A player who thrives on precision and soft play in the kitchen.
Pickle!
Sometimes called out before serving, often as a lighthearted way to start a game.
Paddle Tap
The traditional sportsmanship gesture after a game, replacing the handshake.
Wrapping Up
Learning these pickleball terms will not only help you understand the game’s rules and strategies but also help you connect with other players. The more you play, the more these words will become second nature — and before long, you’ll be using them mid-rally without even thinking.
